These are the crib quilts I made for Lia and Locke as newborns. Lia's was always "used"; I had hoped it would become her "lovey" quilt, but instead, she bonded to a little pink blanket, her "Baa-Baa." Her nursery was decorated with Paddington Bear motifs, and so I luckily found several different Paddington-themed fabrics. This was only the 3rd or 4th quilt I ever made, and I came up with the design myself. It was minimally and very simply straight-line machine quilted. What I was most proud of was how Paddington in the lower left corner holds a kite string that I stitched in black to reach up to the kite in the middle row, which flies in the air above a Paddington who is taking his leisure!
I chiefly straight line machine quilted this quilt, but I hand quilted cloud-shapes in the outer border, to echo the clouds I used for the backing; see below. |
I love both these quilts. You didn't show the backing of Lia's quilt, did you? Paddington is a favorite with me, and I especially like the layout of Locke's quilt. Maybe it is just as well that Lia didn't use your quilt as a 'ba-ba'since these quilts often get to be pretty tacky looking. Maybe she will be using your quilt for hr baby some day.

ReplyDeleteI love these quilts, too, and agree with Nancy that Lia's quilt will be a fond keepsake for her own children...really special. Locke's will always be special too , just not in quite as good shape. How fortunate to have a grandmother who loves them so much and in such a tangible way.ss
ReplyDeleteHi Alice - Thanks for sharing so much of your family and their history for us, and for the beautiful pictures that showcase your heirloom quilts. So many precious memories wrapped up in and around them.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to having you back with us here in Central Texas. Stay well, and travel safely...
Love to you, Dear Friend - Kathy H.
Really sweet quilts...I love star quilts. Thank you for sharing this family story and photos.
ReplyDeleteIt is so wonderful, your drive to make quilts for all your family, nieces and nephews and more. You were an art quilter in the making when you put that kite string across those blocks. Oh I wish I had done the same for my family...well, I could never produce the numbers you have. You must, NOW, make up a book of all the quilts you have made...maybe a Shutterfly coupon book...to have a good collection to review at your fingertips.
